The TMJ or Temporomandibular joint is the hinge that connects the jaw to the head; it joins the temporal bone of the skull with the mandible bone of the jaw. The relationship of the jaw to the head is determined by the jaw joint, the muscles that open and close the jaw and support the head.
Any problem that prevent this complex system of muscles, ligaments, disc and bones from working together properly and harmoniously may result in a Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)
Pain and dysfunction of the head and neck is a very common condition and a malocclusion can be a factor in many types of them because of the inter-relationship of the overall musculoskeletal system. A problem in any of the head, face and neck muscles may affect the others. Also the presence of head or neck pain, swallowing or postural problems, excessive snoring or sleep apnea will contribute to TMD.
